When I think about the waiter story as a book, here's the big plot
structure:

1.  Marlowe pines for Penny
2.  Marlowe befriends Ash
3.  Marlowe gets his life going well after years of struggle
4.  Penny returns to Marlowe
5.  Marlowe, for a brief moment, feels amazing
6.  Penny is jealous of Marlowe's friendship with Ash
7.  Marlowe pushes Ash away
8.  Penny and Marlowe fight constantly
9.  Marlowe leaves Penny.

In short, he is sad, then happy, then sad again, but maybe a little
wiser.

He wanted something, he got it by sacrificing something else, he
realized he made the wrong choice.

He made it out of an awful period of his life.
