INT. JOE'S LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

        [[

These are typed in from handwritten notes.  Pencil on a yellow notepad.
Nothing is canon!  That's why it's pencil :)

Maggie visits Joe.  It's been years since they've seen each other.  Maybe.

She's divorced now.  Maybe.  Or separated at least.  No longer living a secret
double life.

She explains how she fell in love with Sasha while she was married, and how
Sasha played hot and cold and hot cold with her.  In the end, Sasha left,
because she's a big fat avoidant personality type.

At first, Maggie being unhappily married was nice for Sasha because it meant
their relationship was doomed from the start, and Sasha loved the safety in
that, knowing that soon she'd be alone.

"Sasha is almost claustrophobic.  Or like afraid if she let herself, she's lose
herself."

Maggie's story might be...

* miserable in her life
* travels solo, living a double life, sleeping around
* meets Sasha, unlike the world she's from (rich people)
* they click.  it's totally nonsexual at first, really for a long time.

* they witness the environmental devastation of business or government development projects

* they also witness the human cost of business or government development projects

* sasha initiates a kiss one night.  tells maggie after maggie says she knows
her husband deep down doesn't wanher, sasha says, "well I want you."

* sex isn't amazing as much as super tender and affectionate, and like after a
terrible misunderstanding has beeen cleared up.

* they split up.

* sasha tells her she can't see maggie any more.  Maybe it's a phone call.

  Maybe??? Or maybe not.

* maggie keeps slutting around.  one uninteresting dude after another.

* eventually maggie goes home again, tries to patch up her marriage

* sasha joins the terrorists

* somehow later they reconnect. Maybe... Sasha sends her a postcard and says she
saw something that made her think about Maggie.  The tone is really like
almost cruelly casual, as if they were just like pals, not soul mates.

* Maggie finds Sasha and Sasha is in with the eco terrorists, and Maggie
realizes she can't get close to Sasha this time.

* maggie decides to salvage marriage or get out if she can't.

* Maggie goes to ${TEXAS}, and tells Joe about the whole thing with Sasha so far.

And then coming up in a future scene...

* maggie leaves her husband after a lot of agonizing self-discovery

* Maggie realizes she's lost her appetite for romance and sex now.  It all
  seems like distracting herself.

Later, Maggie saves Sasha's life.  Maybe.  Maybe not her life, but saved her
from prison by lying to the cops for her.

Or from getting ripped off or worse by gangsters.  Not sure.  Will pick this
later.

MAGGIE

You need a longer chain on that ceiling fan, Joe.

Joe watches Maggie get up, leave the room, then come back carrying a
chair from his dining table.

JOE

What are you doing?

Maggie stands on the chair, takes the scarf she has around her hair,
ties one end in a knot.

Maggie takes off her necklace.  Beads of different sizes and shapes
and different shades of orange mostly, but some red and purple and
turqoise are in there too.

Maggie takes the other end of the scarf, the end that hangs all the way
down, and ties it around her beaded necklace.

Maggie pulls the chain a few times.  Joe watches her.

JOE

(pointing at scarf)

It's gonna smell like smoke.  If you leave it.  At least smoke, I mean.

MAGGIE

Sasha gave me that scarf.  I don't want it with me.

MAGGIE

You ever lose somebody and it's been a long time and you're still not over it?

Like I added up the time we spent together, scattered across when I ran around

south america, and it really wasn't that much time.  We were either together

all day every day or completely unable to see each other.

MAGGIE

She was something else.  She was no saint.  I don't think she is on the floor

somewhere else telling her friends about me.  She's real secretive.

Maggie climbs down off chair.  She looks at the scarf tied to the ceiling fan chain.

Maggie carries the chair out of the room, then comes back and looks at the scarf.

MAGGIE

(while looking at the scarf as ceiling fan chain)

That broke the spell Joe.  It's not a reminder of someone I don't miss.  Just

don't let anyone use it for a napkin.

MAGGIE

Sasha is almost claustrophobic.  She said to me one time

(imitating Sasha's voice)

I avoid making bonds with compatible people.

(Maggie in her voice)

Can you imagine?  She's self-aware enough to say that out loud.

Maggie walks across room, looks through CDs.  Picks one, puts it in, hits play.

MAGGIE

She fucking killed me, Joe.  I've been dumped.  Hell, I'm getting a divorce.

MAGGIE

And it was really like three times of the same dance.

We're far apart, and then we're together.  She holding me back, me getting

close anyhow, cuz that's what I do, you know?

Then it would be amazing for a while.  Days or weeks.  Then she'd realize she

loved me, and then she'd freak and push me away or disappear.

Maggie bobs head along with music.  The music is whatever works as angry
breakup music.

MAGGIE

I knew before that we were doing too well.  I just had a sense.  It was not

long after we met.  But we were in ${LIMA}, the big city, you know, and we had

just had a really fun night, and we were kissing and rolling across the floor

in our hotel, and I swear she was more into it, more vulnerable than I had ever

seen her.  Totally unguarded.

Joe partially listens to Maggie while he sketches.

MAGGIE

I have a nagging doubt that I'm so stuck on her now because I made her up to be something more than she really is.

Her always holding me at a distance.  I inferred stuff about her because of that.

I'd been watching her videos already, you know?

I'd find details she forgot to hide.  I lived for the moment when I'd shock her.  She looked so scared and amazed and thrilled at the same time.

JOE

It's like when a chick has an objectively amazing ass.  It haunts you, like, how did that get out of reach?
